Karlheinz Brandenburg was born on June 20, 1954 in East Germany. He, is a German elecrtical engineer and mathematician who got his PHD in Electrical Engineering from the Friedrich-Alexander University. Karlheinz created the .mp3 file format, which is a type of audio file that compresses otherwise large audio files into smaller ones. This technology was eventually released on December 6, 1991. This invention resulted in the invention of portable music players, and lead to digital audio players often being referred to as "mp3 players".
